Successful Public Speaking: Interact With Your Audience

One of the things that public speakers fear the most is losing the attention of the audience. When the audience drifts off into daydreams, it can be difficult to bring them back. How do you keep them from drifting off in the first place?

The key to grabbing and keeping the attention of your attendees is to involve them to make your presentation interactive. Your purpose may be to market your business, to persuade them to buy your product, to persuade them to save the world. But if youre not involving them, paying attention to their needs and interests, youre going to lose them, and they wont come back.

Here are some pointers for incorporating interaction into your presentation, and keeping the audience focused on you and your message.

Pointer #1: Start with a question

You may or may not have had the opportunity to gather information on your audience in advance. Whether or not youve researched your attendees, its always effective to start off with a question or series of questions. Some questions Ive asked of past groups include:

How many people in the room exercise every day? How many people would like to exercise every day? I made a note of the people who said they exercised every day and came back to them later to have them share how they fit exercise into their lives.

How many of you have ever felt so angry you wanted to hit someone? How many of you actually did hit someone when you were angry? This question was used to illustrate the point during a domestic violence presentation that, even though we sometimes may feel angry enough to hit someone, most of us dont.

On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest, how many of you rank your public speaking skills between 10 and 7; how many between 6 and 4; how many between 3 and 1? This one helps me get an idea of how the audience members perceive themselves as speakers and whether my content should lean toward basic or advance.

Your question can also be humorous, to start off the seminar with a giggle. The important thing is to get the audience involved from the start. There is also a benefit to you in asking questions; you learn more about your audience, their interests and their needs.

Pointer #2: Use icebreakers and energizers

The purpose of icebreakers is to warm up the group, help them get to know each other and to create a bond and a positive atmosphere within the group. Energizers are to get people moving, thinking and re-energized, especially after lunch!

If you think back to some of the icebreakers youve done at seminars and conferences, you might be rolling your eyes right now. After all, not everyone wants to interact with her or his neighbor, and some icebreakers are intrusive and even embarrassing. The last thing you want to do is to make your audience members feel uncomfortable.

However, icebreakers done well are useful and fun. In addition to helping the audience members get to know each other, it also helps you get to know them. This is a great boost at an event where there is networking scheduled, or where part of the purpose is for the audience members to learn more about each other. Depending on the size of the group and the purpose of the seminar/training/workshop, different icebreakers will be effective.

Easy icebreakers can involve nothing more than one audience member turning to a neighbor and sharing a piece of information. I keep a tin filled with questions on strips of paper to be handed out in smaller groups. Some of the questions: If you could choose a new name for yourself, what would it be? What did you eat for breakfast this morning and who prepared it? What is your favorite time of day, and why? More complicated icebreakers involve games, scavenger hunts, and physical activities like the human knot that probably everyone on the planet has had to disentangle at least once!

Pointer #3: Break the audience into pairs or groups

At some point, you may require the audience to do an activity that requires more dialogue. Breaking the larger group into pairs (also called dyads) or small groups allows them to have a private discussion, which then can be shared with the larger group.

Some people are not comfortable talking in a group. Some people talk more than everyone else, monopolizing the speaker. Breaking into groups encourages your audience to dig deeper into the topic while giving everyone a fair shake at participating.

Pointer #4: Ask for input

This is a great way for you to learn from your audience, and for the audience to learn from each other. Adults have a lifetime of experience and knowledge to share, and in a learning situation, its especially important for adults to contribute to the learning process. Personal relevance and the ability to apply learning to real-life situations are more important to adults than someone else telling them whats important to know.

Bring a flip chart or overhead projector and ask the audience for their input. Write down their words and use them in your presentation. Make sure to note new ideas or concepts that might fit into a future presentation.

Allowing audience members to share some of their own experiences and expertise makes the process more relevant for them, and creates a richer experience for everyone involved. Incorporate interaction into your talks, and youre unlikely ever again to lose an audience member to daydreams.

The fact of the matter is that you are not alone. More than 30 Million people in the U.S. have the same problems as you. Poor credit can be the primary cause for a severe inability to obtain credit cards and/or loans.

There is a solution to this problem and it is right at your finger tips.

Here are 7 ways you can fix and improve your credit score and obtain credit cards and/or loans at favorable rates.

1. Reduce your balance to limit ratio.

When a company is reviewing your credit, most of them will look at the amount of balances on your current accounts and compare that figure to the amount of total outstanding credit you have available.

EX. Total Balances = $10,000 and Total Avail. Credit = $20,000.

Now in this example your ratio would be at 50% which in most cases would be frowned upon by lenders. The ideal ration would be anything less than 30%

A good idea would be to pay off those low balance credit cards to get your balance to limit ratio under 30%

2. Cut back your credit card usage.

Even if you are the type of person who typically pays off your credit cards every month, it is a good idea to keep your balances below 30% of the available credit limit.

Even though you are paying off your credit cards monthly your balance is still reported to the credit bureaus.

One of the best ways to keep track is by using financial software like Quicken or Microsoft Money. Using these programs can help you stay below 30% of your available credit limits.

3. Know your limits.

In some cases, your credit card companies may not report your limits to the credit bureaus. This may cause a drop in your FICO score.

What happens is the credit bureaus will use your highest balance as an estimation of your credit limit. So if you spend between $3000 and $3500 on your card monthly then on the credit bureaus you will look like you are using more of your available credit limit than you really are.

In most cases, you can call your credit card companies and have them report your limits to the credit bureaus.

4. Use your older cards.

One of the most important factors in determining your FICO score is the length of time a card has been open. The older the account the better it will make your credit score look.

It is a good idea to use your older cards every few months just to make sure that the credit card companies continue to update your information with the credit bureaus.

5. Help from credit card company.

If for the most part, you have been a good customer, you can call your credit card company and ask them to remove 1 or 2 late payments from your history. Most of the time, this request has to be made in writing but it is definitely worth a shot. Your chances of success using this method increase the better your record with your lender.

If you have had more than just 1 or 2 late payments, then another option would be to request that your lender "re-age" your account. Typically, this is where you and your lender work out an agreement that if you make 12 or more consecutive payments on time, they will delete any previous late payments.

6. Disputing your old negative items.

So you had a disagreement with a company over a bill a few years ago, and it is still hurting your credit today. Disputing that bill as "not mine" is an option you could use to fix or improve your credit score. A lot of times, if the item is relatively small and old, the credit card companies won't bother to respond to the credit bureaus investigation. Most of the time, this will cause the item to be removed from your credit history.

I have seen success disputing negative items when a lender has merged with another company. The merger causes older debts to get "lost in the shuffle."

7. Concentrate on the important stuff.

There are certain aspects of your credit report that really affect your score. It is important to know what they are and to really focus your attention on these items to repair and improve your credit score.

Here is a short list of the item I suggest you focus on:

1. Negative items that are not yours (e.g. Late payments, charge-off, or collections)

2. Incorrectly reported credit limits

3. Anything not listed as "Current" or "Paid as Agreed". (e.g. Settled, paid derogatory, or paid charge-off)

4. Accounts that shouldn't be there due to a bankruptcy.

5. Derogatory items that are older than 7 years that should have dropped off. It would be 10 years if you have a bankruptcy.

You want to be careful with this one because as we discussed earlier. Having aged accounts actually improves your credit score, even if they are negative accounts. It is not possible to know the effect of closing an old negative account. You are kind of "rolling the dice" when you do it.

As you can see, these 7 ways will get you on your way to raising your credit score and lowering your interest rates.

Good credit is obtainable if you just hunker down and put your mind to it. Following the tips above will help you get out of the credit "dog house".

285 Philadelphia Schools Students Awarded $800,000 in Scholarships

The Philadelphia Education Fund has been in operation for 20 years. A nonprofit organization, the Fund partners with school districts (including the Philadelphia schools), other nonprofit organizations, businesses and individuals to provide scholarships for students in the Philadelphia schools system. Its purpose is to initiate and implement innovative educational programs, of which they have several. They work to improve the quality of teachers in the Philadelphia schools, conduct educational research, and engage the community in school reform. The Fund is one of the largest of 86 education funds that are affiliated with the national Public Education Network.

One of the programs that are sponsored by the Fund is the Philadelphia Scholars Program that awards Last Dollar Scholarships to Philadelphia schools students. In June 2006, they awarded $800,000 in scholarships to 285 schools students.

Over the last 16 years, the Fund has awarded more than $5 million to students, who attend 15 high schools of the Philadelphia schools system many of these youth were the first in their families to attend college. Scholarships range from $200 to $4,000, helping to fill the gap between a students financial aid package and actual college costs. Scholarships cover tuition, fees, books and transportation. They are renewable for a maximum of six years for students attending accredited, degree-granting colleges and universities across the nation.

Scholarship funding is from Philadelphia donors (many of which are the citys most prominent philanthropists in the financial industry), but includes hundreds of individuals, businesses, and organizations. The most active donor is John C. Bogle, chairman of the National Constitution Center and former chairman and founder of the Vanguard Group. Besides wanting to make college a reality for Philadelphia schools students, Bogle hopes that these same children will one day invest in Philadelphias next generation.

Once such group, which raises funds for the Last Dollar Scholarship program, is the Scholars Advisory Committee. To date, they have raised $16 million. A. Morris Williams, Jr. chairs the committee, is the president of Williams and Company, and was formerly an executive of Morgan Stanley. He and John Neff, a committee member and former managing partner of Wellington Management Company, are the two driving forces behind the Philadelphia Scholars Program. Nelly Furtado Loose Pop Music CD Review

The exceptionally talented Pop artist Nelly Furtado has released her CD entitled Loose. I am very confident and happy to announce that I believe Nelly Furtado fans, and Pop fans alike will be pleased with this one. With the release of Loose Nelly Furtados artistic excellence is on full display as Furtado has once again delivered a brilliant collection of tracks that could very well be her best work to date.

I wish it werent the case but, its not everyday that I get a CD from an artist that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just cant force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Loose. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

The CD opens with a great track, Afraid, that I anticipate will be heard on radio stations everywhere, and deservedly so. It really is a very nice track.

Pop music fans will recognize some of the well known contributors on the project including Timbaland and Juanes plus a few other notables as well.

One of the refreshingly nice things about this CD is the way all of the participating artists seem to be really enjoying themselves. Combine that with the overall presentation and youve got one of Nelly Furtados most impressive releases ever.

I give Loose my highest recommendation. It just plain belongs in any serious music collectors collection regardless of genre preference. If you're even mildly into Pop music you'll enjoy this CD. Overall Loose is an a great release. I give it my double thumbs up. You will not be disappointed with one single track.

While this entire album is really very good the truly standout tunes are track 2 - Maneater, track 5 - Showtime, and track 12 - All Good Things.

My SmoothLee Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 3 - Promiscuous. Wow!

How To Clean Up Your Credit Without Paying A Lot

If collection agencies are hounding you, you have a very important right which is outlined in the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. This is the right to have a collection account validated.

If the agency cannot validate the debt, they must end their efforts to collect on it, and they must stop reporting the collection amount to all of the credit bureaus.

This specific right to validation only applies to collection agencies, not to the original creditor. This is because collection agency records are often less reliable than the original creditors records. Collection agencies often go after the wrong people or even misstate the original amount than what was owed. The validation process is meant as a protection from those practices.

In order to validate a debt, the collection agency must present documentation obtained from the original creditor proving that you are legally responsible for the debt. Validation then becomes a powerful tool in helping you clean up your credit report. Collection agencies often dont have the necessary documentation, especially if the debt has been passed around among collection agencies, which often happens. They often have little more than one line on a computer screen, and the Federal Trade commission has made it clear that what they call a mere itemization is not adequate in the validation of a debt.

Of course, the validation process can help you eliminate collection accounts that dont belong to you, but they might also help you get rid of some that actually do. This might surprise you, particularly if youve always believed the credit bureaus assertion that its impossible to remove true, negative information on your credit report. Sometimes, not all the time, but sometimes, you can get accurate information removed from your credit bureau file, especially if it is for an old collection account. The credit bureaus and the Fair Isaac Corporation will tell you that this isnt fair-play. They will say that the system depends on credit reports reflecting the most accurate picture, including all negative and positive information about you.
